The Shortcodes in WordPress

Since Version 2.5 WordPress support so called Shortcodes. They have been introduced for creating macros to be use in a post’s content. For examples of shortcodes and how to use them, see WordPress.com Shortcodes.

What is a ShortCode?

A shortcode is a WordPress-specific code that lets you do nifty things with very little effort. Shortcodes can embed files or create objects that would normally require lots of complicated, ugly code in just one line.

Shortcode = shortcut

Available shortcodes are:

  • Video
  • Audio
  • Images and Documents
  • Miscellaneous

Most of these shortcodes are limited to only WordPress.com. Meaning that if you are hosting your website somewhere else, you might not have access to these features. You will need plugins for them.
